Now more than ever our high street needs us. In York we are really lucky that the fabric of the city is independent shops and cafes. Nestled in the historic buildings of the city are numerous shops all individual and all needing our help. This is the first of the Shop Local York series on my blog. Please support local this Christmas. If we want to be able to benefit from these shops on the other side of this we need to support them to get through it. These businesses set York apart from many other cities and impact the local economy.
First up in my support local guide are the amazing York Gin. They have a lovely selection of gin and you can even engrave the bottle with a personal message. You can order online and whilst it isn’t as fun as popping into the shop for a bottle who doesn’t love receiving a bottle of gin. There are lots of options and I am sure the team at York Gin will be around to answer any questions and give you a recommendation.
Check out Floss and Rose for all things stationary. The quality of the items is amazing and Janes Etsy store is full of cards and pins. Perfect for your thank you notes or small gifts. There is nothing nicer than a hand written note arriving and these are both beautiful and great quality. I have the rainbow paintbrush pin and love it.
Next on my list is the wonderful Noun I challenge anyone to go to the shop and not fall in love with something wonderful that you didn’t know you needed but it is impossible to leave without. Click on the link above for the website full of all of the pretty things. I got this candle holder and matches from there and love them. They have a huge range of items, candles, jewellery, planters like I say something for everyone.
Staying open as a shop selling essentials is the lovely Bishyweigh. Full of food, toiletries and gifts all without plastic packaging. They have had a makeover since I took this picture so it’s even more wonderful now. There are literally hundreds of items to choose from.
I was kindly gifted a Yorkshire Box from Corner Connect and was really impressed with the contents. I wasn’t asked to share the box in a blog but it really is too good not to. A box of products and produce – from Yorkshire would make a lovely gift. The boxes are full of items made locally by local businesses. If your spending more time than usual at home make sure you have good local products to enjoy. The boxes are currently on offer never a better time to buy one.
There are several stalls on the Shambles Market in York, the lovely people at Wiggington Road Nurseries always have time to say hello and give advice on plants and flowers. A really lovely company. Amazing news that they are currently able to remain open during the lockdown. I am sure we will be popping in to collect some festive flowers and hopefully a wreath for my front door.
Lincolnlightfoots are is amazing. Using the familiar scenes of York (and other iconic places) and adding the odd dinosaur, spaceship or duck in vibrant colours. We have four of the prints at home and it is hard to choose a favourite.
I have some wonderful things coming in the post which I will share with you and I would also love to hear your favourite shops to buy from in York.
